Songstress Lami Phillips was part of Lagos’s highly acclaimed musicals Saro 2, the Musical, showcased for a limited time only in April, 2015. Produced by Bolanle Austen-Peters and featuring some of Nigeria’s finest talents, the play saw Lami star as Derry Black, alongside the likes of veteran actor Bimbo Manuel, Gideon Okeke, Dolapo Oni, Ade Laoye, Paolo Sisiano and Paul Alumona in a showcase of music, dance and drama.
Derry Black was a classy, sassy and disciplined executive producer working with Don Ceeto played by Bimbo Manuel, to train four boys who had come all the way from their hometown Kutuwenji to follow their dreams in Lagos. Derry found herself faced with a tough task, turning these boys into professionals – but being the sassy, disciplined woman she is and with the help of her colleague Don she managed to help the boys follow their dreams.
6 days and 13 shows later, the audience and press alike were taken by Lami’s performance as this classy sassy woman. From her British accent to her no nonsense quips everyone fell in love with Derry.
On her experience Lami says, “The cast and direction of Saro2 was exceptional and made the experience magical for me! I have always been a broadway enthusiast so I would definitely welcome more musicals and more theatre in the future.”
Should we be expecting something soon? We can only keep our fingers crossed.
